Moab, Utah is one of the most unique mountain biking destinations on earth — red rock terrain that rides completely unlike anything in California or Colorado. Andrea and I try to make it out at least once a year. For the actual trail breakdown and what we ride, see our personal Moab trail guide. This post covers the trip logistics.
Best Time to Visit Moab for Mountain Biking
Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) are the sweet spots — comfortable temperatures (60s–80s), prime trail conditions. Summer is genuinely brutal: 100°F+ desert heat means early starts mandatory, mid-day breaks essential. Winter is rideable but cold, and some trails get muddy after rain. Spring shoulder season (late March/April) gives you the best combination of good weather, fewer crowds, and dry trails.
Where to Camp in Moab
Sand Flats Recreation Area sits right next to the Slick Rock trailhead — the most convenient camping in Moab if you're hitting the classic trails. Horsethief Campground is a BLM site with incredible canyon views. If you're in a van or self-contained rig (like our 4x4 Sprinter), dispersed BLM camping on the way into Moab gives you total freedom — no reservations, no fees, and waking up in the desert with your bike already loaded is hard to beat.
Bike Rentals in Moab
If you're flying in: Chile Pepper Bike Shop and Poison Spider Bicycles are the go-tos — well-maintained full-suspension rentals, knowledgeable staff, can point you at the right trails for your skill level. Reserve ahead for spring and fall weekends.
Moab Mountain Biking Shirts
These trips have shaped some of our mountain bike t-shirt designs — specifically the red rock desert aesthetic that shows up in several of our designs. If you're heading to Moab, bring something that actually represents the culture rather than a random brand logo.
