Colorado Dirt Biking & OHV Guide: Best Riding Areas, Trail Access & What to Know

Colorado is one of the best states in the country for dirt biking and OHV riding — millions of acres of public land, a massive network of designated riding areas, and terrain that ranges from beginner-friendly fire roads to technical singletrack that'll eat your lunch. Here's what you need to know before you go.

If you're interested in electric dirt bikes specifically, also read the Sur Ron vs eRide Pro comparison and the e-moto buyer's guide — we've ridden both extensively and the technology has changed the game for trail access.

Top Colorado OHV Areas

Rampart Range OHV Area (Pike National Forest) — one of the largest designated OHV areas in Colorado, located near Woodland Park. Hundreds of miles of trails from easy gravel to technical rocky terrain. A great base for a multi-day camp and ride trip.

Crosho OHV Area — less known but excellent for enduro-style riding. More technical than Rampart Range, better for experienced riders comfortable with loose rock and elevation.

Browns Park / Sand Wash Basin — if you're into wide-open desert riding, this northwest Colorado area is worth the trek. Remote, dramatic, and rarely crowded.

Dolores River Canyon — combines river views with canyon OHV routes. Fantastic scenery, multi-day trip potential if you bring camping gear.

Trail Access Notes

Most Colorado OHV riding requires a current OHV registration and proper trail permits for specific areas. The Colorado State Forest Service website is the most up-to-date source for trail conditions, closures, and permit requirements. Closures change seasonally, especially for fire and mud conditions — always verify current status before departure.

Best Time to Ride

Colorado dirt biking season depends heavily on elevation. Lower-elevation areas (below 7,000 ft) can be rideable April through November. High-elevation OHV areas typically open mid-June and close when the first major snow hits, usually October. Spring mud season (March-May at elevation) can make trails seriously torn up — some areas voluntarily close for trail preservation during this period.

Gear for Colorado Dirt Biking

Altitude matters more than most riders expect. Bike jetting (or fuel mapping on EFI bikes) may need adjustment for Colorado altitudes. Hydration needs go up significantly. Morning temperatures can be cold even in summer — layers matter.

E-moto riders: electric bikes actually perform well at altitude since there's no carburetion to tune. The E-Moto collection has trail gear for electric and gas riders alike — check it out.
