Utah has so much mountain biking it almost feels unfair. Most people hear "Utah mountain biking" and immediately think Moab — and Moab is legit. But if you stop there, you're missing some of the best riding in the country. We've put together this guide to the Utah destinations beyond Moab that deserve a spot on your trip planning list.
If you want the full deep-dive on Moab specifically — trails, camping, what to ride first — check out our Moab Mountain Biking Trip Planning Guide. This one is for everything else.
Park City & The Wasatch
Park City is quietly one of the best mountain bike towns in the US. The trail system at Park City Mountain Resort alone has hundreds of miles of lift-accessed and pedal trails. The Wasatch Crest Trail is the crown jewel — a ridgeline traverse with views that make you stop and stare even when your legs are screaming. Mid-Mountain Trail is perfect for a cruiser day with your crew. And the Johnny Dowd / Spiro combo is the kind of flow trail that makes you immediately queue up for a second lap.
Best time to ride: July through September. The resort lifts run all summer, so you can skip the climb if you want to send laps.
Gooseberry Mesa (Hurricane / St. George)
If you've never ridden Gooseberry Mesa, put it on the list now. Located near Hurricane in Southern Utah, this BLM mesa has some of the best technical slickrock riding outside of Moab — with way fewer crowds. The views of Zion from the rim are unreal. Bring a full water supply, wear sunscreen, and go early in the day. This is exposed desert riding at its finest.
St. George also has a massive trail system at Barrel Roll and JEM Trail that suits all levels. JEM in particular is pure flow — fast, bermed, and confidence-inspiring.
Antelope Island State Park (Salt Lake Area)
If you're rolling through Salt Lake City, Antelope Island is worth a stop. Riding a causeway out to an island in the Great Salt Lake is a trip in itself, and the trails offer some surprisingly technical terrain with dramatic views. Good for a half-day add-on to a longer Utah trip.
What to Wear on the Trail
