Sedona, Arizona is in a different category as a mountain biking destination — red rock trails that look like Mars and ride unlike anything else in the Southwest. For the actual trail breakdown from our personal sessions there, read our Sedona trail guide. Here's the trip logistics.

Best Time to Visit Sedona

Spring (March–May) and Fall (September–November) are the best windows. Temperatures in the 60s–75°F range, trails dry and fast. Summer gets hot (90s–100°F) but remains rideable with very early starts — Sedona elevation (4,500 feet) keeps it slightly more bearable than Moab. Winter is often excellent: crisp clear days, empty trails, with occasional snow that closes some trails briefly. January weekdays at Sedona might be the best kept secret in Southwest mountain biking.

Where to Stay

Camping: Manzanita Campground in Oak Creek Canyon is excellent — creek access, shade, right in the action. Cave Springs Campground nearby is another solid option. For van campers, dispersed camping around Sedona is limited but the Coconino National Forest roads north of town have options. Hotels in Sedona itself are expensive; Cottonwood (20 minutes south) cuts costs significantly while keeping you close to the trails.

Bike Rentals

Thunder Mountain Bikes and Absolute Bikes are the most recommended in Sedona — full-suspension rentals, shuttles to trailheads, and solid local knowledge. Book ahead for spring and fall weekends.

The Shirt for the Red Rock Rider

These trips inspired several designs in our mountain bike and adventure t-shirt collection. Wear something that tells the story when you're done with the trail.
