We bought our 4-year-old son Kyler his first Ikon ski pass this year. I wasn't sure what to expect, but Kyler is a pretty athletic kid. When he cut the cord and started skiing independently — without the little wedge attachment — on his fourth day ever, I was genuinely taken aback.
We have a little ski shredder in the works. He basically skied everything at June Mountain last weekend minus the black diamonds. My wife Andrea was so inspired she immediately bought our 2-year-old daughter Riley her first set of skis.
Building the Family Adventure Rig
This is exactly why I bought our 170 4x4 Sprinter van — so we could spend 3-4 weeks over winter breaks skiing our way up into the Canadian Powder Highway. Economical, flexible, and sampling as many great Ikon-affiliated resorts as possible with the whole family along.
We're not completely out of the woods yet on teaching the kids, but having Kyler riding greens and blues already is a huge milestone. Soon we'll be back to the kind of ski resort road trips that have inspired most of our ski t-shirt and ski beanie designs.
A few of our best designs for the family ski crew:
- I Heart Big Dumps — for the powder parent who planned the whole trip around a storm cycle.
- Freshies for Breakfast Ski Beanie — for the 5am-lift-line dad who earns first tracks before anyone else is up.
- Ski Like a Girl — inspired by watching Andrea charge terrain most grown adults won't consider.
If you ever want to meet up and shred some pow at Mammoth, drop me a line. We're always looking for more adventure-minded ski families.
